JAZZ HARP FESTIVAL & ACADEMY 2013 - REVIEW
The Jazz Harp Festival was a three-day gathering of all things jazzharp and improvisation. As most of you know, Brenda and I are fully responsible for this massive amount of work;) Luckily, this edition we had lots of volunteers and we could even hire a producer and production-assistant. This was quite necessary, because the event had grown bigger than we could ever imagine. Packed into the festival were hundreds of harpists and listeners finding their way through workshops, courses, expo, open mics, concerts and jam sessions. Popular musicians/teachers from the Netherlands, France, Italy and the USA were leading workshops and intensive courses. The main venue, Het Leidse Volkshuis, runned at full tilt. Concert venues the Aalmarktzaal, Scheltema, and jam session joint De Branderij for sure didn’t see a devoted audience like this before. Jazz Harp Land at its best, conquering the city of Leiden, leading its residents to close harpists and harp addicts into their hearts. It was a blast. We, as organisers, had a mighty good time witnessing the blossoming of a true jazz harp community. Not only on site, but also worldwide online: we reached out to those who couldn’t make the travel to the Netherlands this time by livestreaming the concerts and other festival activities. I was asked to be harp soloist with the Altea Ensemble. I wanted a program that will feature my new custom-painted chrome 44-string CAMAC acoustic-electric harp. We knew we wanted to program "Debussy Dances" and wanted another piece to feature harp in a contrasting style. I immediately thought of "Baroque Flamenco" from Deborah Henson-Conant as I have already learned the cadenza and worked with Deborah several times in performance workshops.
We licensed the parts and score from Deborah, and because this ensemble has different instrumentation, she also sent us the "Finale" source files for some of the instruments so we could change them. So, for example, we changed the "Oboe" parts into "Saxophone" parts by transposing them into Bb.
"Baroque Flamenco" is a harp feature - but the orchestra ALSO includes harp. The orchestra harp part is, of course, much simpler. I wanted to involve more of the harp community in the piece, so instead of having just one orchestra harpist, I invited THREE harpists to play in the orchestra [who are they and why did you choose them]. As a teacher this gives me the chance to introduce my students to orchestral playing, and of course it's very exciting to the audience to see more harps on stage. It also helps fulfill the mission of the composer, which is to increase the visibility of harps in concert and expand the way most people think of harp music.
The performance is at the Vredeskerk in Leiden, on the 2nd of April at 7.30 pm, with the Altea Ensemble with Johan Top and the Jazznonet with Anja Nielsen, entrance €7.50, www.BplusC.nl

Voor de International Jazz Harp Foundation organiseerde ik samen met Brenda Dor-Groot de eerste Jazz Harp Academy in Rotterdam. Maestro's van de jazz harp Park Stickney en Edmar Castaneda gaven les, bijgestaan door jazz saxofonist Kurt Schwab en jazz pianist Matt Scheffers.

Winter 2009 Danses Sacree & Profane van Debussy
Het was hard werken afgelopen weken om al die mooie noten 'erin' te krijgen.
Zondag 25 januari was het concert en heb ik mijn debuutoptreden als soliste voor het orkest mogen meemaken. Ik heb genoten. Het orkest dat onder leiding stond van Andras Czifra heeft me prachtig begeleid, de samenwerking was heel erg fijn en heeft geleid tot een bijzonder mooi eindresultaat. Hopelijk kan ik binnenkort wat geluids-& beeldfragmenten op mijn website plaatsen. Dus kom gauw nog eens kijken!
Najaar 2008 / video-DVD project Another Thought
Eindelijk is het zover...een begin met de opnames voor 'Another Thought' is gemaakt.
De eerste opnames/ruwe schetsen zijn hier te bekijken (de harp in deze clip is nog 'n synthesizer, maar binnenkort zal hier mijn rode harpje klinken). De opnamesessie bij mij thuis is ook vastgelegd, deze kun je hier bekijken. En..erg leuk..mijn hond Tobias heeft ook een belangrijke rol in het clipje gekregen!
Cheesehead media (van initiatiefnemers Charley Dumerniet en Rob Kwak) is een project in ontwikkeling welke bedoeld is om uit te groeien tot een community van muzikanten, kunstenaars, engineers, producers, videomakers en eenieder die zich geroepen voelt samen met hen artistieke projecten vorm te geven met het internet als medium
Het eerste project is 'Another Thought' waar ik dus ook het e.a. voor zal inspelen.
In dit video/DVD project participeren nog een aantal andere muzikanten, een DJ een danseres en videomakers. Ik zal te zien/horen zijn op mijn nieuwe aanwinst: mijn rode elektrische harp!
Najaar 2008 / Tagore Liedercyclus
Frans van der Sommen, een Brabantse componist, heeft een hele bijzondere liedercyclus gecomponeerd op teksten van de beroemde Indiase gedicht-, roman- en toneelschrijver Rabindranath Tagore. De liederen worden in verschillende bezettingen vertolkt, waarvan 3 liederen met harp. Binnenkort vindt de (wereld) premiere plaats in kleine kring...wellicht in de toekomst zal het ook te beluisteren zijn voor een groter publiek.
Najaar 2008 / cd-project Randy Winterdal
Randy Winterdal, jazzbassist en componist afkomstig van Curacao, heeft voor zijn nieuwste cd twee composities gemaakt waarbij hij gevraagd heeft of ik de harppartijen wil inspelen. Nou, graag natuurlijk! Het resultaat is prachtig, de harp komt verrassend goed tot zijn recht in deze Caribische werken. De opnames hebben plaatsgevonden in Oktober in Studio TamTam in Baarn. Nu is het wachten op het eindresultaat...
